5-Minute UAD Tips
Ocean Way Studios plug-in
The Legendary Rooms of Ocean Way
From the opening of Bill Putnam’s United Recording in 1957, to the annexing of neighboring Western Studio in 1961, to their reinvention as Ocean Way Recording under Allen Sides — the famed “Studio A” and “Studio B” at Ocean Way Studios have shaped the sound of countless classic records. From Ray Charles and the Beach Boys, to the Rolling Stones, and Radiohead, music creators have sought out the sound of these beautifully balanced rooms for more than five decades.
Dynamic Room Modeling
Ocean Way Studios reinvents ambience processing with UA’s proprietary Dynamic Room Modeling technology, an exclusive combination of signal processing and advanced measurement techniques. Whereas standard convolution reverbs only provide a sonic snapshot, Dynamic Room Modeling offers the full spectrum of a studio’s ambience possibilities. Specifically, Dynamic Room Modeling provides the unique dispersion properties of various sources, as recorded through various vintage microphones that can be positioned in each room — in real time — via a simple click-and-drag interface. This technology gives the Ocean Way Studios plug-in a shocking level of sonic realism.
An Unrivaled Microphone Collection Under Your Control
With virtual access to $250,000 of hand-picked, vintage microphones, Ocean Way’s microphone setups and Distance controls are the centerpiece of the plug-in. The setups capture the ideal microphone selections and placements for each room and source type.
Up to three vintage microphones pairs (Near, Mid, Far) are available in each setup, allowing for creative sonic blending. Click-and-drag the microphones to position them in the room, then EQ and filter their sound as desired — complete with mic bleed and proximity effects.
Transform Tones With Reverb and Re-Mic Modes
Ocean Way Studios offers two modes of operation: Reverb mode, using send/return paths to mix wet and dry signals; or Re-Mic mode, to fully immerse the original source audio within Ocean Way’s rooms. Re-Mic mode is by nature “fully wet,” and can be used to entirely replace your original room and microphone sounds with the fabled sound of Ocean Way.
“Ocean Way Studios instantly adds incredible depth, size, width, and vibe to your music. It's like owning a re-amp box for one of the best sounding studios in the world.”
– Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Shinedown, Train)
“The Ocean Way Studios plug-in sounds so good and has the right amount of flexibility. The workflow mimics the actual choices at the studio very nicely…it sounds authentic and rich — like those rooms with those mics.”
– Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Beck, Other Lives)
“The Ocean Way Studios plug-in lets me mix with a new sense of space, adding a whole new level of depth to my mixes.”
– Andrew Dawson (Kanye West, Jay-Z, Fun.)
“Every session I've done at Ocean Way has been an unparalleled experience with amazing results. The plug-in offers an incredible opportunity to realistically add those sonics to any musical project with stunning realism.”
– Richard Chycki (Rush, Aerosmith, Dream Theater)
“It’s great to finally be able to add a real room vibe to sounds that otherwise didn't have one. The Ocean Way plug-in helps bring a mix together with depth and space.”
– Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers)
“I assumed the UAD Ocean Way Studios was a reverb, but it's way more than that. I've been down the rabbit hole since I installed it and I'm not ready to come out yet.”
– Andrew Scheps (Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Duke Spirit)
“Hearing drums through Ocean Way Studios plug-in is like being transported to Ocean Way! The true sound of Studio A or Studio B applied to anything I want.”
– Chris Dugan (Green Day, Iggy Pop, U2)

whenever I get poorly recorded/overly close-miked tracks, I slip a little of this on as faux room mics and it comes to life with space and depth. Wish there was a cut-down version with only one mic that took up less DSP, but otherwise 100% happy.
Maybe it was the plugin that impressed me most. When one does not have the financial resources to have a nice recording space: just do a neutral and proximity recording, and ocean studio does the rest. Fantastic! this plugin makes me dream. I feel like I have the juice of the most beautiful studio in the world ... with my 12m2 room. The best plugin I have!
Excellent Space and feel
I have been wanting to own the Ocean Way plug in for a while now. It really delivers a studio ambience. I had a Jazz quartet (Guitar, Piano,Bass, Drums) programmed up with good samples. Placing the instruments in the Ocean Way spaces really brought a live feel to the samples. In an odd way it made them sound better by sounding worse ( if that makes sense) What i mean is that the very clinical clean sound was given an authentic dirt making the samples sound more like players in a studio rather than samples in a computer. I don't think i have really got past the most basic of set up options yet an look forward to working with the plug in more and exploring what it can bring to samples and live instruments.

This is the first time for such a fun reverb! Plug-in sound source has an enormous effect. But for vocals and acoustic guitars you have to adjust carefully so that the high frequencies do not become hard.
Could have been more simple but sounds amazing
Lots of different settings can be done and it could have been a bit more easy to use for a beginner like myself. But nevertheless it sounds great.
Creates depth like nothing else! Awesome plugin. I love it and use it on vocals, guitars, drums, strings, everything!! Mostly on reverb mode in parallel. Sometimes I want something really in the back of the soundscape, then it's on the channel in remic mode. I use it every mix.
Adds so much life to what ever u need!
It Just Brilliant that's all.

So you tapped out this really cool drum pattern, or recorded a live drum set. Whatever. Then you run it through Ocean Way Studios. And then like Urkel you say "Wow did I do that?" Lol! All kidding aside. Every engineer, aspiring musician/producer/beat maker owes it to him or herself to try this plugin. You have to hear it to believe it.
I finally took the plunge with this and it's worth it. I only use it for drums and it adds a largeness and presence that I can't get with any other reverb. You just need to try it to understand.
More than a reverb
WOW!! I can say this is an amazing room emulator, best one I've ever used, gives life to dry drums as if they were actually recorded in a room, and running a guitar DI track it freaked me out how it sounded like it was track with microphones, can't say enough good things about this plug in.
I wish I could say otherwise.
A great re amp / reverb plugin - creates a real vibe to individual instruments as well as to entire mix. Buy it - you'll be glad you did!!
Very unique plug in
I have a song where the instruments sounds great but detached. Meaning they won't really gell into a nice mix because they are recorded in several different rooms. I started using the plugin's re-amping mode and the tracks really come to life, especially my midi-pianos and B3s. Couldn't the next step be other studios? Abbey Road, Muscle Shoals etc?
Unlike any other reverb plugin
The Ocean Way plugin is really a one-of-a-kind. In this day and age where most processing occurs in the box, this plugin is invaluable for samples and virtual instruments. It can turn any dry and lifeless recording into a delicate and intimate snapshot of Ocean Way's studio A or B. Especially useful when trying to give a sense of space and depth to individual parts or even an entire session.
Good, but only find myself using it for ambience
This plugin sounds great, but it is not as versatile as I expected it to be based on the price. For now I've only found myself using it to add ambience to dull close-mic'ed sources.
More than just reverb.
Though it is a ressource-eater, it gives a shine and more life to almost every signal. Love it on drums & guitars.
The vocal spaces I needed
This plugin provided me with a much needed reverb and tool to create spaces that I wanted and needed. Its great for experiments along side other verbs.

OWS is the "King of Rooms"
'Ocean Way Studios' is a real gem! I mostly mix tracks that are recorded in smaller studio's and smaller rooms. This plugin "OPENS THINGS UP" and lets the tracks "BREATHE WARMTH IN SPACE AND COHESION". This plugin is an example of what poetry does with words; It shifts you to a different paradigm ;-) I have never been to Ocean Way Studio's but you immediately hear a "good sounding large room". The choice of microphones, alignments, distances, filters and mix-faders for near/mid/far-positions are so easy to use and can make all the difference. I use it on my aux-busses and always have at least two of them loaded in my mixes: one for my Vocal-sends and one for my Drum-sends. I could use convolution reverbs with studio ambiences, but somehow the Ocean Way plugin always gels more with the sources and makes it 'More Real'.
