The Only End-to-End Neve 1073 Circuit Emulation

Universal Audio’s all-new Neve 1073 plug-in for Apollo and UAD-2 provides all the features, unique circuit behaviors, and coveted sound of Neve's original hardware design. By modeling the dual-stage "Red Knob" preamp, revered three-band EQ, and post-fader output amplifier with obsessive detail, the Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ replicates the experience of the original 1970s hardware with stunning accuracy. Like the hardware, the new Neve 1073 plug-in incorporates all 10 clipping points from the preamp and EQ circuitry, delivering trademark clarity, grit, and harmonically rich class-A saturation.

Unison Technology for Apollo Interfaces
Harnessing UA’s groundbreaking Unison technology, the Neve 1073 plug-in blurs the lines between analog and digital, giving you all of the 1073 preamp’s impedance, gain staging “sweet spots,” and circuit behaviors that have made it legendary among the audio faithful.

The secret is Unison’s bi-directional control and communication from the 1073 plug-in to the digitally controlled mic preamps in the Apollo Twin, Apollo DUO, and Apollo QUAD interfaces. With Unison, the Apollo preamp changes to the Neve 1073's physical input impedance, allowing both "Lo" (300 Ω) and "Hi" (1200 Ω) impedance setting options. This provides the 1073's full gain and tonal range to your favorite studio mics.
Add Clarity and Color to any Source
Of course, the Neve Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection isn’t just for Apollo owners. UAD-2 hardware owners can employ the Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Collection for mixing, tone shaping, or simply adding sheen and bite to vocals, guitars, drums and more — without ever leaving the box. To get you started, there are artist presets from renowned 1073 users such as Ed Cherney, Joe Chiccarelli, Jaquire King, Ryan Hewitt, David Isaac, Ryan West, and more.

UAD-2 power users can place Neve 1073 instances across multiple channels, turning their favorite DAW into a classic Neve console.

Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection.
Basics and FAQ.
What is the Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection?

The Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection is part of Universal Audio’s groundbreaking entry into microphone preamplifier and channel strip plug-in emulation, with Apollo's Unison™ integrated mic preamp technology. This collection features Universal Audio's emulation of the world's most desirable preamp and EQ console channel module, providing the first true end-to-end circuit model of the revered Neve 1073. The collection also includes two standalone EQs (1073 and 1073SE Legacy EQs) providing all the tools needed to turn your Apollo Console or DAW into a virtual Neve mixer.

How do Unison mic preamp plug-ins work with Apollo’s built-in preamps?

Apollo’s mic preamplifiers are digitally controlled and offer high-resolution, ultra-transparent translation from microphone to converter. While fantastic sounding on their own, these preamps are also designed as an ideal starting point to add processing color through Unison enabled mic preamp plug-ins. Specifically, Unison mic preamp plug-ins control the analog impedance and gain structure of the Apollo’s physical mic preamps — so hardware and software works in tandem to very convincingly emulate classic tube and solid state preamp designs.

How do I use the Neve 1073's preamp while recording with Apollo?

Simply drop the Unison mic preamp plug-in into the “PREAMP” insert in Apollo's Console application. This enables near-zero latency recording with Mic, Line or Hi-Z inputs through the target preamp model(s). In addition to physical gain and input impedance control of the Apollo’s hardware preamps, Unison allows tactile control of modeled preamp parameters. See the "Unison" chapter in the Apollo Software Manual for more information.

I own UAD-2 hardware and/or Apollo 16. Can I still use the Neve 1073's preamp?

Yes. Unison plug-ins can also be used as standard UAD plug-ins inside your DAW of choice, or as realtime inserts in the Apollo Console. The Unison plug-ins are great for adding color and tone with any UAD-2 hardware, but the preamp interactivity is only possible on Apollo DUO, Apollo QUAD, and Apollo Twin (i.e., devices that have physical mic preamps). Start from the clear and punchy "more real than real" 1073 response. Turn it to a warming, class-A euphonic saturation. Push the circuit even further for audible–but never brittle–dynamically complex, harmonically rich Neve transistor clipping. Used in stereo, the 1073 adds focus, improves separation and bring your bus groups or sources to the front of the mix.

How are the three included plug-ins different from each other?

UA's all-new Neve 1073 provides the only authentic, end-to-end circuit model of the revered class-A preamp and EQ circuit, which means an extremely detailed model was made of the 1073; This starts with a Marinar input transformer model with real physical impedance switching at Apollo's input (under Unison). This is followed by the transparent analog gain of Apollo's preamp (under Unison), which interacts bi-directionally with our Neve dual transistor-preamp (AKA "Red Knob") model with non-clipped and clipped nonlinear behaviors, such as characteristic asymmetric and dynamic-duty-cycle type clipping. The three-band, active EQ's filter interactions and internal amp clipping behaviors are also modeled along with the passive low cut filter, as well as the EQ's loading of the preamp output. Finally, the plug-in also captures the non-linear behaviors of the 1073's post-fader output amplifier, the output transformer, and much more, with a total of ten different places the circuit can clip.

When physical amplification is not required or circuit non-linearites are not desirable, the 1073 Legacy EQ provides a spot-on linear emulation of the 1073's three-band EQ and passive cut filter, complete with modeled with band filter interaction. The 1073SE Legacy is nearly identical to the 1073 Legacy but is not-upsampled, providing excellent DSP efficiency for your UAD system.

When I use the Neve 1073 in my DAW, it has Input settings for Mic-Z Lo and Hi, but the plug-in can’t be connected directly to a microphone?

In use cases other than as the front end of an Apollo interface, the Neve 1073's main workflow is not as a mic amplifier, but is used to color your signal at Line level in either your DAW or via Apollo Console’s non-integrated insert points after the mic signal has been amplified. However the Mic-Z Lo/Hi settings have modeled behaviors even without Unison, and are always available. The plug-ins can also can be used for heavy distortion of audio sources — it is the equivalent of putting line level signal into a mic level input. Use caution when adjusting from Line to Mic for this workflow, as a large jump in gain is expected!

Why does the Neve 1073 have so much distortion when I set the Input setting in the Mic range in my DAW or in the Console?

See the above FAQ. Like the hardware, the Neve 1073 plug-in easily allows the user to send Line level signal through the “virtual” Mic input, which allows creative use of distortion to color signals.

Which Neve 1073 hardware is the basis for the new 1073 plug-in?

The Neve 1073 is based on a vintage "golden unit" channel module pulled from an original Neve 8014 desk, including the original P&G output attenuator/fader.

"It seems almost anticlimactic to say it, but Universal Audio has done it again. When you consider that UA has taken the world's most famous microphone channel head on and created a tracking-friendly version that comes frighteningly close to the original

    (Computer Music)

"UA’s new 1073 sounds absolutely stunning. The Apollo’s own preamps sound good as they are, but insert the 1073 and the difference is night and day."

    Ryan Hewitt

(Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers)

“The new UAD 1073 plug-in adds another dimension to the sound. The harmonics are fantastic. The output fader lets you drive the line amp harder and reduce output level, just like I do on a console.”

    Joe Chiccarelli

(Jason Mraz, Beck, The Strokes, Morrissey)

The new Neve 1073 plug-in is a bigger-sounding, punchier version of the original. The addition of the fader and impedance switch offers more possibilities and an even more accurate representation of the original console.

    David Isaac

(Marcus Miller, Luther Vandross, Eric Clapton)

The new UAD 1073 Collection is another welcome addition to my other Neve plug-ins! As soon as I instantiated it, everything became nice and warm.

“The new UAD Neve 1073 [Preamp & EQ Collection] sounds amazing. Super warm, just like the real thing.”

    Joel Hamilton

    (Pretty Lights, Sparklehorse, Rival Schools)

“The look and feel of the new [UAD] Neve 1073 plug-in is totally great. Everything is tightened up a bit and the addition of the fader enables some great gain staging flexibility in my plug-in chain.”

    Steve Levine

(Culture Club, Beach Boys, Ziggy Marley)

"All my earliest sessions were recorded and mixed using Neve consoles — they were the only mic pres & EQs that I knew. The new UAD 1073 plug-in has truly captured every nuance.”

    Ivan Barias

    (Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Estelle)

I really love the UAD Neve 1073 plug-in. Using it in Unison mode gives you an amazing front end when tracking vocals, guitar, and bass. If character and saturation is what you're looking for, then look no further.

  • Ed Cherney

(Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne)

“The new UAD 1073 plug-in is so realistic, I'm thinking of selling my hardware…well, maybe not.”

    Neve 1073 Preamp is good
    by A. Kamel(Thursday 20 October, 2016)

Read More

My go to Pre & EQ... Replaced my 1272 Clone!
    by E. Kurttekin(Monday 10 October, 2016)

I have a 1272 clone which I was using (made by B. Averill - killer unit) for 8-9 years and I was very happy with it. Then I bought an Apollo Twin and the first plugin I bought was Neve 1073 Collection. I never went back to my clone and I'm seriously thinking of selling it so I can buy more… Read More
