Please register your product online by creating an account at my.uaudio.com.

User Documentation

A complete, 300+ page user manual for the product is included on the product CD-ROM and also in the software bundle (or download it here). The filename of the manual is UADManual.pdf. It is placed inside the Applications>Powered Plug-Ins Tools folder during software installation.

The manual includes such indispensable information as tips, shortcuts, and detailed plugin info. This QuickStart Guide is designed as a companion document to the UAD manual; it includes information that is not in the user manual.

Apple's Preview.app (included with Mac OS X) or Adobe’s free Adobe Reader application (version 6.0 or higher) is required to view the manual and QuickStart Guide. If you don’t already have Adobe Reader installed on your system, the Adobe Reader installer is on the UAD Powered Plug-Ins CD-ROM for your convenience or you can download it from www.adobe.com.

  • 130 MB of available disk space

  • Available PCI or PCI-X slot for each UAD-1 card

  • Available PCI Express (PCIe) slot for each UAD-1e or UAD-Xtenda card

  • Available ExpressCard/34 or ExpressCard/54 expansion slot for each UAD-Xpander

  • 1024 x 768 or higher resolution monitor

  • An AGP or PCI Express graphics video adapter (PCI graphics is not supported)

  • CD drive or internet connection for software installation

  • Internet connection required for registration and obtaining optional plugins

  • VST, Audio Units, or RTAS host software such as Steinberg Nuendo, Apple Logic Pro, or Digidesign Pro Tools

  • Processor upgrade cards are not officially supported

Installing the UAD Hardware

The UAD Powered Plug-Ins hardware may be installed before or after software installation. Refer to the computer manufacturer’s documentation for instructions on installing expansion cards if necessary.

IMPORTANT! The UAD-1 will ONLY work in PCI and PCI-X slots, and the UAD-1e will ONLY work in PCIe slots. However, if a computer system has both PCI/PCI-X and PCIe slots, the UAD-1 and
UAD-1e can both be installed and used simultaneously as a multicard system. The UAD drivers are the same for both cards.

PCI or PCI-X should not be confused with PCI Express (also known as PCIe). PCIe is not compatible with PCI or PCI-X because PCIe uses a completely different connector.

NOTE: For UAD-Xpander, refer to the installation instructions in the UAD-Xpander.pdf manual.

To install the UAD DSP card(s):

  1. Turn off your computer.

  2. Open the computer case.

  3. Remove the rear slot cover and screw of the lowest-numbered available expansion slot.

  4. Before handling the UAD card, discharge any static electricity by touching the outer casing of the power supply.

  5. Remove the UAD card from its protective anti-static bag. Do not touch the gold edge connector contacts.

  6. Hold the card gently by the top edges, and line up its connector with the PCI slot inside the computer.

  7. When the connector and slot are aligned, press the card into the slot using firm, even pressure. The card should "pop" into place. The top of the slot on the motherboard should be flush and parallel with the edge of the UAD card.

  8. Secure the card with the previously removed screw.

  9. Replace the computer case.

Hardware installation is now complete.

Installing UAD Powered Plug-Ins software on Macintosh systems

The UAD Powered Plug-Ins software may be installed before or after hardware installation.

Note: The UAD Powered Plug-Ins software bundle (drivers and plug-ins) is identical for the UAD-1 and UAD-1e cards, and the UAD-Xpander.

To install the UAD Powered Plug-Ins software:

  1. Launch the software installer.

    - To install from CD-ROM, insert the UAD Powered Plug-Ins CD. Open the CD window, then double-click the file named "Powered Plug-Ins Installer."

    - To install from a download, first decompress the downloaded .zip archive by double-clicking it. Then double-click the resulting .dmg file to mount the disk image. Double-click the disk image to open its window, then double-click the application named “Powered Plug-Ins Installer.”

  2. The installer will guide you through the installation procedure.

  3. Software installation is now complete. Restart the computer after finishing installation(s). You can use the UAD Performance Meter to verify installation using the instructions in the next section.
  • The Powered Plug-Ins Tools folder is installed at: /Applications
  • VST plugins are installed at: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/Powered Plug-Ins
  • Audio Units plug-ins are installed at: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
  • RTAS plug-ins are installed at: /Library/Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins

Using the UAD Performance Meter to check your installation

  1. Launch the UAD Performance Meter application by either clicking the UAD Meter icon that was placed in the Dock during installation, or by double-clicking the UAD Meter application inside the Powered Plug-Ins Tools folder that was placed inside the Applications folder during installation.

  2. When the UAD Performance Meter application is in the foreground, select System Info... from the File menu.

  3. If your UAD card is operating correctly, you will see "OK" displayed in both the "DSP Status" and "UAD Status" items in the "UAD Hardware" category (middle left).

  4. The "UAD Software" category should display the Powered Plug-Ins version. The UAD Driver Build, UAD Engine Build, UAD GUI Library Build, and UAD Meter Build items should all display the version with the date and time stamp. Note: All versions should match!

Removing Powered Plug-Ins software and the UAD card

  1. Launch the Powered Plug-Ins Installer application. Click through the splash screen and license agreement.

  2. When you get to the install screen, select "Uninstall" from the drop menu.

  3. Click the "Uninstall" button. The software is removed.

  4. Drag the UAD Meter out of the Dock.

Software removal is now complete. Confirm the computer is shut down and powered off before removing the UAD DSP card(s).

Getting Started with UAD Powered Plug-Ins

Once the UAD card and Powered Plug-Ins software have been properly installed, the UAD Powered Plug-Ins are accessed and used just like any host-based plugin. All UAD Powered Plug-Ins can run concurrently with each other and with host-based plugins simultaneously, in any combination.

Video Documentation
In addition to the written documentation in the software bundle and on our website, numerous video movies are available that explain how to install the hardware and software, register your product, obtain optional plug-ins, and more. These movies are available on the product DVD in the retail package. They are also available online.

Host Documentation
Each host application has its own particular methods for instantiating (launching) a plugin. Consult the host application documentation for specific instructions on loading and using plugins with the application.

Optional Plugins
Some UAD plugins (such as Cambridge, DreamVerb, and Fairchild) are copy-protected and require authorization to enable them after the demo period expires. Authorization is accomplished by obtaining a license for an additional fee then downloading an authorization file from your my.uaudio.com account.

Demo Mode
Copy-protected plugins have a demonstration mode for evaluation before purchase. Once the demo mode is activated, the plugin will run without functional limitations for 14 days. The 14 day demo period can only be activated once, and cannot be stopped or restarted during this period. We recommend you do not activate demo mode until you have the opportunity to thoroughly check out its sound and functionality.
