About the UAD Powered Plug-Ins Software Installation Process
It is very important to follow the installation procedure exactly.
- If you are installing UAD Powered Plug-Ins on your system for the first time, we recommend you install the software first before inserting the UAD card(s) in your computer.
- If you are upgrading, or wish to install additional UAD cards, it is not necessary to remove the previous version of UAD Powered Plug-Ins software or the UAD card from the system.
- If you are installing additional UAD cards, install the software first before inserting the additional UAD card(s) in your computer.
- Note: The UAD Powered Plug-Ins software bundle (drivers and plug-ins) is identical for the UAD-1, UAD-1e, and UAD-Xpander.
- Instructions for installing the UAD DSP card follows the software installation instructions.
Software Installation on Windows XP, Server 2003, and Vista Systems
IMPORTANT NOTE: Close all open files and applications before starting the installation procedure. Specifically, make sure the UAD Performance Meter and all applications using UAD Powered Plug-Ins are not running.
- Launch the software installer.
- To install from CD-ROM, insert the UAD Powered Plug-Ins CD. If the installer doesn’t automatically run, double click the Setup.exe application located on the CD.
- To install from a download, double-click the downloaded software archive, which is an executable application. The installer will run automatically.
- Setup will guide you through the installation procedure.
- When installation has completed, power down your system to install the UAD card(s). If the UAD card(s) is already installed or you are upgrading, restart the system.
- After restarting Windows XP/2003, the New Hardware Wizard will try to locate the new drivers. Follow these steps:
a. Select the "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" option, and click Next.
c. The UAD card driver will be installed, click "Finish" when it’s complete.
d. The New Hardware Wizard will run again to look for the Powered Plug-Ins driver.
e. Select the "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" option, and click Next.
g. The Powered Plug-Ins driver will be installed; click "Finish" when it’s complete.
- Installation is now complete. You can use the UAD Performance Meter to verify installation (see instructions on page 6 of this guide).
If you want to install the UAD plugins into another application, run the installer again.
Installing the UAD Hardware
For best results, the Powered Plug-Ins software must be installed before installing the UAD DSP card. See the previous section for important software installation instructions. Refer to the computer manufacturer’s documentation for instructions on installing PCI cards if necessary.
IMPORTANT! The UAD-1 will ONLY work in PCI and PCI-X slots, and the UAD-1e will ONLY work in PCIe slots. However, if a computer system has both PCI/PCI-X and PCIe slots, the UAD-1 and UAD-1e can both be installed and used simultaneously as a multicard system. The UAD drivers are the same for both cards.
PCI or PCI-X should not be confused with PCI Express (also known as PCIe). PCIe is not compatible with PCI or PCI-X because PCIe uses a completely different connector.
NOTE: For UAD-Xpander, refer to the installation instructions in the UAD-Xpander.pdf manual.
To install the UAD DSP card(s):
- Turn off your computer.
- Open the computer case.
- Remove the rear slot cover and screw of the lowest-numbered available expansion slot.
- Before handling the UAD card, discharge any static electricity by touching the outer casing of the power supply.
- Remove the UAD card from its protective anti-static bag. Do not touch the gold edge connector contacts.
- Hold the card gently by the top edges, and line up its connector with the slot inside the computer.
- When the connector and slot are aligned, press the card into the slot using firm, even pressure. The card should "pop" into place. The top of the slot on the motherboard should be flush and parallel with the edge of the UAD card.
- Secure the card with the previously removed screw.
- Replace the computer case.
Hardware installation is now complete.
Using the UAD Performance Meter to Check Installation
The UAD Performance Meter is an application that displays the current CPU and memory status of the UAD DSP hardware card in realtime. Its small floating window enables you to monitor the resource load of the UAD, while simultaneously using your host application.
It also contains system information and configuration windows that enable you to confirm the UAD is functioning properly, check the version of the software drivers, and adjust the UAD buffers. See chapter 3 of the UADManual.pdf for detailed UAD Meter information.
To verify UAD Powered Plug-Ins hardware and software installation:
- Double-click the "UAD-1 Meter" icon on your desktop to start the UAD Performance Meter application.
- Click the icon in the upper left corner of the title-bar, and select "System info" The System Information dialog appears.
- If your UAD card is operating correctly, you will see "OK" displayed in both the "UAD Status" and "DSP Status" items in the "UAD Hardware" category for each installed card (mid
