UAD VST to RTAS Adapter Information

Version 2 of the UAD VST to RTAS Adapter from FXpansion is available now as a free download! The v2 adapter, for use with Pro Tools 7.x, is now integrated into the UAD Powered Plug-Ins v4.5.0 (and higher) software installer. The prior version (v1.07ua) of the UAD VST to RTAS Adapter, for use with Pro Tools 6.x and lower, is still available for Windows and Mac OS (see "Obtaining" section below).

UAD VST to RTAS Adapter Overview
The UAD VST to RTAS Adapter is software that enables Pro Tools LE and TDM users to utilize the UAD DSP card and Powered Plug-Ins within Pro Tools. Universal Audio has teamed up with British adapter specialists FXpansion to create a version of their popular VST to RTAS Adapter which only works with the UAD.

UAD VST to RTAS Adapter Requirements
Your RTAS system must meet the UAD System Requirements in addition to Digidesign's RTAS/Pro Tools requirements. All UAD users can install UAD v4.5.0 plug-ins and the v2 adapter for use with Pro Tools 7.x. UAD users are also eligible for the v1.07ua adapter for use with Pro Tools 6 and lower.

Obtaining the UAD VST to RTAS Adapter
The adapter v2 is included within the UAD Powered Plug-Ins software installer (v4.5.0 and higher). Simply select the RTAS option in the UAD installer to simultaneously install and configure the adapted UAD plug-ins.

Version 1.07ua of the adapter is not included in the UAD software installers, on the UAD CD-ROM, nor available from FXpansion; it is only available to registered users at my.uaudio.com. If you do not see the adapter in the downloads section of the "My Systems" page after registering, please contact customer support.

Using the UAD VST to RTAS Adapter
For v2, the adapted UAD plug-ins are automatically installed and configured. They are used just like any other RTAS plug-in; there is no adapter interface. For v1.07ua, please refer to FXpansion's adapter manual that is copied to the user-specified location during installation of the adapter. It contains detailed information regarding the setup and operation of the the adapter software.

Note: Universal Audio does not provide technical support for the full retail version of the adapter from FXpansion (which adapts all VST plugins, not just UAD Powered Plug-Ins). Contact FXpansion for information about the full adapter version.

Important Configuration & Compatibility Information

  • Please visit www.digidesign.com for the latest technical information and system requirements for Pro Tools.
  • The adapted UAD RTAS plug-ins require the VST version of UAD Powered Plug-Ins to be installed. The VST plug-ins are installed as part of the RTAS option in the UAD v4.5.0 (and higher) installer. Pro Tools 6 (and lower) users of adapter v1.07ua must first download and install the UAD VST plug-ins BEFORE installing the adapter software.

    Please review the VST technical notes page for additional information.
  • All Pro Tools users should set MIN_GNT to 64 (if it is not already). This setting is found in the Configuration window of the UAD Performance Meter.
  • (Adapter v1.07ua only) Set the Adapter and Pro Tools buffer to the same size for the best performance at all buffer sizes. We recommend a buffer size of 1024 unless tracking.

Known Issues

  • Multi-mono mode is not supported.

  • Session compatibility between Windows and Mac OS is not supported (this is a limitation of the FXpansion software).
  • (Mac only) Adding a plugin while the transport is playing may cause playback to stop with an error. Simply restart playback if this occurs.
  • There are known issues regarding noise and clicking when using Mbox that are documented by Digidesign. These issues are not related to the UAD. Please contact Digidesign for more information.
  • (Mac only) Settings in the UAD CS-1 family of plug-ins (CS-1, EX-1, DM-1, DM-1L) are not loaded on PowerPC Macintosh systems. This issue occurs only when UAD plug-ins created with version 2.x of the UAD VST to RTAS Adapter (and also the full retail VST to RTAS Adapter) are active. We are actively working with FXpansion to resolve this issue.
  • (Adapter v1.07ua only) Project settings and preset files for the CS-1 family plugins that are saved with UAD version 3.x cannot be loaded with UAD version 4.x.

    Workaround: Complete existing projects with UAD v3.x and start new projects with UAD v4.x (or take screenshots in UAD v3.x and enter the parameter values manually in UAD v4.x).
