UAD Available Now for PCI Express (PCIe)
Universal Audio is committed to supporting the PCI Express (also known as PCIe) platform on Mac and PC. PCIe versions of the UAD are now shipping:

Important: PCI Express is not PCI-X!
- PCIe should not be confused with PCI or PCI-X. PCIe is not compatible with PCI or PCI-X because it uses a completely different connector. The UAD-1 will ONLY work in PCI and PCI-X slots, and the UAD-1e will ONLY work in PCIe slots.
- The UAD Xpander connects via ExpressCard, which is an extension of PCI Express technology.

UAD/Apple Compatibility
- Power Mac G5: The most recent Power Mac G5 systems have PCIe expansion slots, but most have PCI-X slots. Please see our G5 page for centralized support information on G5 systems.
- Mac Pro Desktops: All Mac Pro systems have PCIe slots only. UAD v4.5.0 (and higher) for Mac OS X includes Universal Binary support for Intel Mac compatibility.
Note: Version 4.4.1 (and earlier versions included with the UAD-1 & UAD-1e cards) is NOT Intel Mac compatible.
The UAD-1/UAD-1e performs well in both single and multicard configurations with UAD v4.5.0 (and higher) and Mac Pro desktop machines (note 8-core exception below). However, depending on the RAM configuration, the machine may have issues booting if multiple UAD cards are installed. We have only seen this issue when 4 GB or more of RAM is installed on systems with outdated firmware.
Update: This issue is resolved by updating to the latest Mac Pro firmware, which was released by Apple on November 13, 2006.
- There appear to be specific issues with the new 8-core machines that we are working with Apple to resolve. Therefore, currently we DO NOT recommend buying an 8-core machine to use with UAD products. We will provide more information as soon as we have completed further testing. UAD users with 8-core machines can email macsupport@uaudio.com if they wish to assist with expediting further testing.
- MacBook Pro Laptops: UAD v4.5.0 (and higher) can be used on a MacBook Pro with an ExpressCard PCI or PCIe expansion chassis, but only when running under Mac OS 10.4.8 or higher. Mac OS 10.4.8 was released by Apple on September 27.
Of course, our UAD Xpander also works great with the MacBook Pro.
- Intel Mac with Expansion Chassis: We have tested Expresscard/PCIe to PCI and PCIe to PCIe expansion chassis from SBS, Magma, Cyclone and One Stop Systems. A compatibility matrix for customers who wish to setup this kind of system is published in our December 2006 Webzine Support Report.
Addtional expansion chassis information is available directly from the manufacterers:

UAD-1e Technical Information
- Please review our motherboard page for specific compatibility information with particular chipsets.
- The UAD Powered Plug-Ins sofware bundle (drivers and plug-ins) is identical for the UAD-1 and UAD-1e cards. Download the latest UAD software here.
- If a computer system has both PCI/PCI-X and PCIe slots, the UAD-1 and UAD-1e can both be installed and used simultaneously as a multicard system.
- The UAD-1e is a x1 PCIe card that is compatible with ALL existing physical PCIe slots regardless of speed (x1, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32).
- x1 PCIe speed and card form-factor was chosen specifically for maximum PCIe motherboard compatibility.
- PCIe is point-to-point and NOT a shared bus like PCI so x1 provides more than adequate bus bandwidth for audio DSP.
