Critical Information
This page contains the latest support information for the UAD-Xpander and UAD-Xtenda. Please review this information carefully before connecting the Xpander hardware, some of which is not in the retail package or software download.
User Instructions
The UAD-Xpander and UAD-Xtenda have their own hardware documentation. The filename of the manual is UAD-Xpander.pdf. It is on the software CD-ROM and is placed inside the Powered Plug-Ins Tools folder during software installation (or download it here). Refer to the manual for complete Xpander user instructions.
- UAD-Xpander runs on windows notebook computers under Windows Vista only. Windows XP is not supported with notebook computers.
The Xpander can be used under Windows XP only on PCIe DESKTOP systems via the UAD-Xtenda adapter, which is available for purchase at my.uaudio.com for $99US.
- System Sleep is not supported when using UAD-Xpander under Windows. System Sleep should be disabled while the UAD-Xpander is connected.
- To disable Sleep in Windows: In Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Power Options>Power Scheme panel, set the Power Scheme to "Always On”
- To disable Sleep in when notebook lid is closed: In Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Power Options: Click the "Change when the computer sleeps" option on the left side of the screen, then select "Never"
Macintosh:
- System Sleep is supported under Mac OS X. If the machine is put to sleep with the transport running, the UAD plug-ins will typically be disabled several seconds before audio stops. Therefore, a change in the audio may be noticed. Similarly, when the system is awakened, it may take several seconds for the UAD plug-ins to be reinitialized.
All Platforms:
- Install the UAD Powered Plug-Ins software (v4.7.1 or higher) before connecting the Xpander hardware. View the ReadMe and QuickStart on the software CD for instructions.
- The Xpander hardware must be connected and powered up before booting the computer. Refer to the UAD-Xpander.pdf manual or Quickstart Guide DVD for instructions.
- Do not remove the UAD ExpressCard or UAD Link Cable, or power down the Xpander while the Xpander is connected to an active computer unless no UAD clients are running and the ExpressCard is properly powered down. Refer to the UAD-Xpander.pdf manual or QuckStart Guide DVD for instructions. Alternately, simply power down the computer before disconnecting the Xpander.
If the computer is active and no UAD clients are running, the UAD ExpressCard may be safely removed after powering it down by selecting "Safely Remove Hardware" (Windows Task Bar) or "Power off Card" (Macintosh Menu Bar) before removing it. However, the computer must be rebooted with the Xpander connected in order for the hardware to be recognized again.
- The UAD ExpressCard/34 may be used in an ExpressCard/54 slot.

Additional Information
- The PCIe UAD-Xtenda is a PCIe to ExpressCard Adapter which enables your UAD-Xpander to also be used on your desktop Mac or PC like any other UAD card up to a maximum of 4 UAD DSP units (whether UAD card or Xpander chassis).
- UAD-Xpander cannot be used with desktop computers that have only PCI or PCI-X slots because there is no PCI or PCI-X ExpressCard adapter available.
- The ExpressCard slot on notebook computers is non-latching, so it is possible to accidentally pull the card out.
- Select a suitable location for the unit. See “Install Location” in Chapter 2 of UAD-Xpander.pdf.
- Do not bend sharp angles into or otherwise kink the UAD link cable. The cable has a ferrite core and multiple conductors that could be damaged by im- proper handling.
- The UAD-Xpander contains a UAD-1e card that looks similar to the UAD-1e model for desktop computers. However, the cards are not the same! Do not attempt to install a UAD-Xpander card into a computer slot, or put a UAD-1e into the Xpander chassis. Doing so will damage the cards and/or the computer logic board.
