The Legendary Rooms of Ocean Way

The Legendary Rooms of Ocean Way

From the opening of Bill Putnam’s United Recording in 1957, to the annexing of neighboring Western Studio in 1961, to their reinvention as Ocean Way Recording under Allen Sides — the famed “Studio A” and “Studio B” at Ocean Way Studios have shaped the sound of countless classic records. From Ray Charles and the Beach Boys, to the Rolling Stones, and Radiohead, music creators have sought out the sound of these beautifully balanced rooms for more than five decades.

Dynamic Room Modeling

Dynamic Room Modeling

Ocean Way Studios reinvents ambience processing with UA’s proprietary Dynamic Room Modeling technology, an exclusive combination of signal processing and advanced measurement techniques. Whereas standard convolution reverbs only provide a sonic snapshot, Dynamic Room Modeling offers the full spectrum of a studio’s ambience possibilities. Specifically, Dynamic Room Modeling provides the unique dispersion properties of various sources, as recorded through various vintage microphones that can be positioned in each room — in real time — via a simple click-and-drag interface. This technology gives the Ocean Way Studios plug-in a shocking level of sonic realism.

An Unrivaled Microphone Collection Under Your Control

An Unrivaled Microphone Collection Under Your Control

With virtual access to $250,000 of hand-picked, vintage microphones, Ocean Way’s microphone setups and Distance controls are the centerpiece of the plug-in. The setups capture the ideal microphone selections and placements for each room and source type.

Up to three vintage microphones pairs (Near, Mid, Far) are available in each setup, allowing for creative sonic blending. Click-and-drag the microphones to position them in the room, then EQ and filter their sound as desired — complete with mic bleed and proximity effects.

Transform Tones With Reverb and Re-Mic Modes

Transform Tones With Reverb and Re-Mic Modes

Ocean Way Studios offers two modes of operation: Reverb mode, using send/return paths to mix wet and dry signals; or Re-Mic mode, to fully immerse the original source audio within Ocean Way’s rooms. Re-Mic mode is by nature “fully wet,” and can be used to entirely replace your original room and microphone sounds with the fabled sound of Ocean Way.

I can now work in a large pro studio!

I've wanted to work in a large pro studio for many years, and now I can! OWS sounds big but without being washed out. I can put mics wherever I want them and at any volume level and get the best sounding mix without leaving my chair. What's not to like? There's currently no other plug-in out there to touch it.

Mixed feelings about this one

It sounds pretty good for drums and guitar but a CPU hog and pretty expensive
Can get pretty similar room sounds with many other plugins
Mic swapping pretty neat
It's ok

Works Great for Small Drum Rooms

I bought this plugin a year or so ago. I purchased another UAD card and got 3 free plugins I only had two I wanted to I picked this as the 3rd. The first time I tried it I though well I will probably never use this one. I just moved my studio and the drum room is very small. So, I cannot get a good room mic sound in it. I tried everything positioning the mic in different locations around the studio against the wall etc. Then I stuck this plugin on in reverb mode and it just worked. Re-mic mode works well also but I prefer the reverb mode better. Works much better than heavy compressing with added other plugins. If you have a small drum room and want to use a room mic this is a must have.

Best Room Plugin

Just working on some drums and something wasn't right. I kept things dry then sent it all to the Ocean Way Studios plugin for a Re-Mic. Wow. Absolutely magic. Still sounded like my little kit, but just the right roomy-life. Not too much, not too little. Nice work UA.

Excellent results!

Ocean Way Studios gives excellent results! The plug-in great effectiveness for Drums machines!!!. I mainly use it in context of reverb of a room. Very realistically and dynamically. Drums, Digital pianos, Organ, Vocals.... - microphones and then record in that atmosphere... Awesome!

Great Room

Definitely my go-to for room ambience. Being able to commit it down during tracking with the apollo is also a plus.

By living in the future, we get to inhabit the past...

This. This is the sort of technological marvel I was promised back when the Jetsons defined the future. The ability to re-mic things is astonishing to me. I've had hours of fun exploring the various room and mic set ups. This plugin will get a lot of work from me.

Takes a little getting use to

It's certainly worth persevering with this plug-in, don't expect great results with your own recorded material straight away. You'll have to record in a fairly dampened environment, or you can deverb using various plugins out there, maybe a bit of EQ for clarity, then just listen to the presets.

You have to really listen to the effect of this plugin for a fair while, not seconds here and there, bypassing on and off. You really just have to listen for a while to really understand what you're getting from it and when it's going to be suitable or not.

Don't see it as an excuse to mic in a mediocre environment with lots of dampening. It's a particular sound and it isn't for everything. But when it works, it really works.

Do yourself a favor...
Buy this.
It's good for everything.
You can play it - million ways.
It's one of those plugins you're waiting for a chance to purchase... A coupon... Something like this...
This plugin is the 1st or 2nd most important on my list.
I'm just sorry for doubt it year ago when I started with UAD...
Go for it!

Sound is really awsome for orchestra samples. With other reverb (for example emt or lexicon) it will be great !

Finally I got rid of reverb-issues! There are so many options with this plug, from small to great rooms. I used a setting with distance stereo as only reverb on a recording and the results were great. I got the dry intimate vocalsound mixed with the rest of the band further back in the room without artefacts. Thank you UAD!

Perfect for midi drums

This plugin's remic feature is superb on making midi drums sound like live drums. That's why I got it. My studio space is too small for a full set, so I have to go midi, but I like having a realistic sound, so I tested this and was blown away. It does so much more than a mere reverb could ever do. It makes the kick sound deeper, the set have a room mic additional sound. I love it. Great for the pro project studio.

Realistic, blends well

Realistic, blends well. Can't beat the Bricasti's but the best plugin out there for this use.

Very specific uses

I tried this plugin several times before I decided to purchase it. Every time I tried it I struggled between loving the sound and not finding a real use for it. Even after purchasing it I still don't use it as much as I should. I think at this stage I will mainly use it for re-micing digital instruments to make them feel more real, but do it offline to save DSP. I would like to use it more as a reverb unit but it is so heavy on DSP one or two instances is all you will get.

The Re-Mic is my new weapon of choice!

As a producer who specializes in the boom bap sub-genre of hip hop music I use a lot of vinyl based samples in my music, especially when it comes to the drums. Ocean Way's Re-Mic function allows me to create fresh and interesting drums that still has that vintage breakbeat vinyl sound underground hip hop fans still love. I also use it with live drums, piano, brass and string samples. This is a great plugin and thank you for creating it. Please do more studios!

So far so good

I'm still finding my way around this one. I've used it as a reverb to get more of a real "room" sound for fiddle and guitar, and with a bit a tweaking one of the presets I've hit on something I really like. Many more possibilities to be explored, surely. Good job, lads.

Really great, but miss multiple outputs

This is a really cool plugin, love the re-mic mode, which is like being in the studio, moving mikes around. Only reason it doesn't get 5 starts is that unfortunately the big difference with a studio situation is that you cannot process the mid and far mikes separate (except for volume/pan/phase). I hope UA will update the plugin with multiple outputs like a lot of VI have.
