Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder Reviews

I like it. Sometimes it adds exactly what the mix needs—clarity, punch, and presence. But other times, it can make the mix sound harsh and unpleasant. It’s a good tool, but definitely not something I’d use on every mix.

I really like it! I used the Sound City Room plugin on the mix and mastered with the Ampex ATR, the results are fantastic.

I compared a lot of similar plugins and ultimately settled on the Ampex ATR-102. It offers a wide range of settings to suit any need, and I especially like the way it makes it sound as if you’re hearing tape “imperfections”—a slight hiss and sometimes even what sounds like background noise... but in reality, that’s exactly the vintage analog sound character we’ve strayed so far from—and it’s precisely that character that brings a recording to life. Analog, live recordings. A solid 5 stars for this plugin! Professional!
