With Auto-Gain, you can make adjustments to either the Repro or Record levels while maintaining perfect gain staging.     It provides what I was looking for...but better. Having never worked with this type of hardware before, I was a little worried it would take me too long to learn the parameters...but no! I quickly grasped how it works, thanks to the presets which provide a good starting point.
