5+ Years with UAD — Apollo x4 Gen 2 Takes My Studio to the Next Level
I have been using Universal Audio interfaces for over five years, starting with the Apollo Solo USB and later the Apollo Duo USB. Recently, I upgraded to the Apollo x4 Gen 2, and after three months of regular use, I can clearly say the improvement is significant.
The audio conversion quality is noticeably better, monitoring latency is extremely low, and the Unison preamps sound more open and detailed. The increased DSP power allows a smooth and efficient workflow with multiple UAD plugins while tracking and mixing.
Overall, the Apollo x4 Gen 2 feels like a complete professional studio solution. I’m very satisfied with this upgrade and proud to continue my journey as a UAD user.
Happy to be a UAD user.

Great Update + Add-on
I’ve used a lot of UAD interfaces, from Arrow to Twin X to X4 Gen 1. I decided to upgrade to the X4 Gen 2 and I think it’s definitely worth it since I use its built-in plugins. I highly recommend it. And if they add the SoundID Reference Add-on, it would be the perfect combination for getting accurate sound fidelity.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Universal Audio Apollo x4 is worth it for producers and engineers looking for a step up from the Apollo Twin. With four Unison preamps, QUAD Core DSP, expanded I/O, and Apollo X Gen 2 conversion quality, the Apollo x4 brings a professional studio workflow to a desktop unit. The 129 dB dynamic range, Apollo Monitor Correction by Sonarworks, and a library of over 200 UAD plug-ins give you the tools found in the world's top recording studios. If you’re ready to build a serious studio, the Apollo x4 is a great foundation.
The Apollo x4 includes Unison preamp technology, onboard QUAD Core DSP, elite audio conversion, and a fully integrated monitor controller — a combination you won’t find in any competing desktop interface. Most interfaces pass all the processing to your computer, but the Apollo x4 lets you track through authentic emulations of classic analog gear in realtime with near-zero latency before anything touches your DAW. Add Apollo Monitor Correction by Sonarworks and features like Assistive Auto-Gain and Plug-In Scenes in UAD Console, and the x4 becomes a complete studio hub rather than just a converter.
Unison technology lets the Apollo x4's four mic preamps and two instrument inputs physically match the impedance, gain structure, and circuit behavior of classic hardware from Neve, API, Manley, Fender, and more. When you load a Unison-enabled UAD plug-in, the preamp input itself responds the way the modeled gear would, shaping the signal at the point of capture rather than processing it afterward. The result goes deeper than a typical emulation, because the preamp is actually behaving like the real thing before the signal ever reaches the converter.
The Apollo x4 gives you four Unison mic preamps versus the Twin X's two, a second headphone output with its own cue mix, additional line outputs, ADAT I/O, and QUAD Core DSP, making it the right upgrade if you need to track multiple sources simultaneously or want more routing flexibility. Both use Apollo X Gen 2 conversion quality, so the sonic foundation is the same. What changes is how much you can do at once. If you regularly track a full band setup, want to run two independent headphone mixes, or need the expanded I/O without moving to a rackmount unit, the x4 is the natural step up.
The Apollo x4 Gen 2 features 24-bit / 192 kHz audio conversion with a 129 dB dynamic range, placing it among the highest-resolution monitoring chains available in any desktop interface. The Gen 2 design specifically improves the D/A converters and monitoring accuracy, resulting in smoother, more detailed sound — and it’s why the integration with Apollo Monitor Correction by Sonarworks is so effective. What you hear back is a more accurate picture of what you recorded, which matters most when you're making mix decisions.
QUAD Core DSP means the Apollo x4 has four SHARC processors dedicated entirely to running UAD plug-ins in realtime, independent of your computer's CPU. This is how the x4 achieves near-zero monitoring latency when you track through plug-ins in UAD Console, even with complex chains across multiple inputs. A QUAD Core system gives you roughly four times the processing headroom of a SOLO Core setup, which translates to more plug-ins running simultaneously without hitting a processing ceiling during recording or mixing.
UAD DSP plug-ins run on the Apollo x4's onboard QUAD Core processors, enabling realtime tracking through classic hardware emulations with near-zero latency. UAD native plug-ins run on your computer's CPU and work directly inside your DAW, meaning they're available in any session without consuming the interface's onboard DSP. The Apollo x4 supports both simultaneously — monitor through DSP-powered preamp and compressor emulations while tracking, then switch to UAD native plug-ins for mixing. You never have to choose one or the other.
The Apollo x4 is compatible with both Mac and Windows computers via Thunderbolt 3. On Mac, Apple Silicon and Intel systems are both supported. On Windows, the Apollo x4 requires a supported software version and a PC with a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. For exact version requirements, review UA’s compatibility guide.
The Apollo x4 is compatible with all major DAWs that support VST, AU, or AAX 64 plug-in formats, including Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Ableton Live. LUNA, UA's own DAW, offers the deepest integration with Apollo hardware, with features built specifically around the Apollo Console workflow. For any DAW using standard audio driver protocols, the Apollo x4 works as a full-featured audio interface.
Yes, the Apollo x4 includes a built-in monitor controller with alternate speaker switching, subwoofer support via Bass Management, and integrated talkback for communicating with talent in a tracking room. UAD Console manages all of this alongside your plug-in routing, so you can switch between monitor pairs, run multiple headphone mixes from the two headphone outputs, and control levels without leaving your session. Apollo Monitor Correction by Sonarworks adds room and headphone calibration on top, applied at the hardware output stage with no added latency.
The Apollo x4 supports optical Toslink I/O for up to eight additional channels of I/O via ADAT or two via S/PDIF, making it easy to add an ADAT-equipped preamp or expander for more mic inputs. You can also link up to four Thunderbolt Apollo interfaces to build a system with up to 128 channels of premium I/O, with the x4 serving as the desktop control point. As your studio grows, the x4 is built to stay at the center, whether you're adding a rack Apollo for more preamps or bringing in additional Thunderbolt expanders.
DSP-based interfaces like the Apollo x4 remain the most practical way to track through high-quality plug-in processing with near-zero monitoring latency, something native-only setups still struggle with under heavy CPU loads. UA continues to expand the UAD DSP and UAD native plug-in libraries in parallel, so the ecosystem will keep growing with you, whether you’re running DSP or native. For producers and engineers who want the feel of recording through real analog gear, the DSP case is as strong as it’s ever been.
Apollo Monitor Correction is a Sonarworks-powered room and headphone calibration system built directly into the Apollo x4, applied at the D/A output stage with no added latency. It compensates for the acoustic characteristics of your listening environment and the specific response curve of your headphone model to give you a more neutral, accurate picture of your mix. This is the same calibration technology behind SoundID Reference, which is integrated into the x4's hardware so it runs transparently without occupying a DAW insert or affecting your session routing. The Apollo Monitor Correction Add-on and all required software are available at sonarworks.com.
The Universal Audio Apollo x4 sits in the premium desktop interface tier, and the price reflects what's included: realtime QUAD Core DSP, four Unison preamps, Apollo X Gen 2 conversion, Apollo Monitor Correction by Sonarworks, and a UAD plug-in bundle with classics from LA-2A to Pultec to Pure Plate. Comparable interfaces from other brands typically don't include onboard DSP or bundled software libraries, so the x4 offers more than a direct spec comparison suggests. For producers investing in a professional studio setup, the combination of hardware quality and ongoing software support makes the x4 a solid long-term investment.
The Universal Audio Apollo x4 connects to your computer via a single Thunderbolt 3 cable, so a quality cable suited to your setup is the first thing worth getting right. A good pair of studio monitors and reference headphones are natural additions to round out your setup, since both work with Apollo Monitor Correction for more accurate mixing. For expanding inputs, any ADAT-equipped preamp will connect directly to the optical port, letting you add up to eight more analog channels without latency.
