Add the Sound of an Era-Defining Reverb

From Talking Heads' Remain In Light to U2's The Unforgettable Fire, the Lexicon 224 remains one of the most popular digital reverb units ever made, with its lush reverb tails. Now you can track and mix with this singular piece of audio history with the Lexicon 224 Reverb plug-in.

What They Say

I'm very familiar with how the Lexicon 224 sounds and the UAD plug‑in is an amazing replication!

Jeff Balding

Taylor Swift, The Eagles, Florida Georgia Line

Convolution reverbs can be great, but they don't offer the direct, simple path of adjusting a parameter on the Lexicon 224. I'm glad to have an old friend back.

Jerry Harrison

Talking Heads, No Doubt, Violent Femmes

When I began mixing 'in the box' I missed the Lexicon 224 [more than anything else]. Now it's back, with that dense, flutter-free reverb that I love so much.

Eric "E.T." Thorngren

Bob Marley, Robert Palmer, Talking Heads

    Fine!

With this plugin you can create a fine, warm hall space, in which details are preserved; sounds very good also in combination with Ocean Way Deluxe: Ocean Way emulates the room, Lexicon 224 the "Shimmer" above...

    Great lo-fi reverb.

By modern standards it's a very lo-fi reverb. However, if that's what you need, then you're on the right track. I wouldn't use it for rooms, plates and everything else where a dense reverb is needed. But it's good for large spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb is worth it if you want the lush, era-defining reverb heard on decades of classic records, running right inside your DAW. It uses the exact algorithms and original control processor code from the hardware, so you get the real character rather than a general impression of it. For the price of a single plug-in, you get the exact algorithms behind decades of iconic records.
The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb stands apart because it recreates one specific, historically important hardware unit rather than offering a general-purpose algorithmic reverb. It is built from the exact algorithms and control processor code of the original, and it also models the input transformers and early 12-bit converters that gave the hardware its tone. That combination is why it sounds like the record you remember, not just "a reverb."
The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb comes in a native version that runs on your computer and an Apollo/UAD-2 version that runs on UA DSP hardware, and a single purchase licenses both. If you are working on any Mac or Windows machine, the native version is all you need. If you own an Apollo interface or a UAD Accelerator, the accelerated version lets you run it on that dedicated processing instead.
Yes. The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb runs the exact algorithms and original control processor code from the hardware, so the reverb and chorus programs behave the way the real unit does. It also captures the tone of the input transformers and the early 12-bit gain-stepping converters, which are a big part of why the original sounds the way it does. Engineers who tracked and mixed on the hardware for years say the plug-in nails it.
The System Noise control is a UA-exclusive feature that lets you switch the original hardware's inherent noise on or off. Leave it on and you get the modeled gain stepping, parameter zippering, and system hiss that are part of the vintage character. Turn it off when you want that same reverb tone with quieter, cleaner operation. It is a nice way to keep the authenticity when you want it and the clarity when you don't.
The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb includes eight classic reverb programs and one chorus program, covering the range of sounds the hardware was loved for. Every parameter from the original is laid out as dedicated sliders and buttons, so you can pick a program and season it to taste quickly. It also ships with presets built by well-known engineers who used the hardware on major records.
No. The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb runs natively on your Mac or Windows computer, so no Universal Audio hardware is required to use it. If you do own an Apollo interface or a UAD Accelerator, you also get the accelerated version to run it on that hardware instead. Either way, the sound is the same.
Yes. The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb works on both macOS and Windows as a native plug-in, and it loads in your DAW like any other plug-in. Licenses are managed with a free iLok account, with the option to use an iLok USB key if you want to move your plug-ins between machines. It fits into the setup you already have rather than asking you to change it.
You can use the Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb on almost any source, including drums, vocals, guitars, and synths. Its eight reverb programs and one chorus program range from tight ambience to the long, lush tails the hardware is famous for. Reach for it while tracking to hear parts in context, or while mixing to place elements in a shared space.
Yes. The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb is one of the most direct paths to those classic '80s reverb sounds, especially through its Plate and Concert programs. Those programs shaped the big, atmospheric productions of the era, and here they come from the same algorithms that made them. If you are chasing that sound, this is the source, not an approximation of it.
The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb is best for lush, musical reverb with a clear sense of space, from smooth long tails to the dense, flutter-free ambience the hardware is known for. It shines on vocals and drums, and its Plate and Concert programs are go-to choices for that big vintage sound. If you want a reverb that adds identity and depth rather than disappearing into the background, this is the one to reach for.
Yes. Vintage digital reverb plug-ins like the Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb are very much worth using, because a reverb with a strong musical identity still does something a clean, general-purpose one cannot. Producers keep reaching for these sounds because they place a track in a recognizable world instantly, without a lot of tweaking. The Lexicon 224 gives you a specific, storied sound that has aged into a standard rather than out of style.
The Lexicon 224 shaped the reverb on a long list of era-defining records, including Talking Heads' Remain In Light and U2's The Unforgettable Fire. Its lush tails made it one of the most popular digital reverb units ever made, and its sound became part of the character of that whole period. The Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb plug-in gives you that same reverb to use on your own productions.
You can get the Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb through the UAD Spark subscription, which includes it alongside the full library of UAD native plug-ins. If you would rather own it on its own, you can also buy it outright as a single plug-in. A free trial is available if you want to hear it in your own mixes first.
