Apollo Twin, a portable audio production studio

After doing so much research on Audio Electronics, I found it useful for Audio Production purpose. We already have CPU based plugins but now a days few manufacturers are creating audio signal processors that use GPU. We already have SHARC processors that takes care of UAD plugins. But I am curious about availability of plugins that can use our unused GPU of our computer system

Awkward Install but well worth it

I am a newbie to recording, so I was worried when I had no left channel monitoring when installed. Support took a long time to get back to me and a firmware reset solved it.

The sound quality is superb on this unit as are the UAD plugins, for my guitar based needs the Helios pre amp and pultec EQ are on all the time.

Great sound, with ease

Sold some hardware pultec and La-2a clones to get into this unit. Would say the included plugins sound almost as good and made the switch well worth. Plus I got many more plugins on top of those too! The 1176 sounds better than most hardware versions. And the unison stuff is phenomenal! Hat off.
Only downside is that it's missing optical out for expanding with more out channels. And that the Luna software is not yet supported (or even planned) for windows users.

Finally I have an Apollo that works for me.

I have a purpose built PC for recording and wanted to use Thunderbolt. I had many issues with Apollo Twin Thunderbolt (which i discovered too late was Thunderbolt 2) and Windows Thunderbolt version 4. I returned the Apollo and paid the differencre to get the Twin USB model and it worked perfectly, immedialtely. Now all i have to do is learn all the ins and outs of recording guitars and i am finding the UA 5 minute video's, very informative. Thanks :)

Review

Workflow much better than with my old focusrite before if I compare. Good quality hardware and looks good. I just was surprised in the beginning with the power supply cable, first it didn't switched on, but than I checked the cable inside the apollo and there was a hidden action to do for me, slightly turning the cable inside and then it was connected right.

Finally

Finally able to use the UAD plugins all my other artists friends have been bragging about
It would be nice if there could be a way to exceed the DSP by using the computer CPU though

So clean, so classic

I sold my babyface pro fs and bought an apollo twin.
Working with unison completely changes the rules of the game!
Hopefully an update to vst3 will come out...

Thanks!!

Great interface for Windows users

This is my third Apollo Twins that I've purchased. Used to own the Twin Duo, sold it and bought the Twin MKII Quad. Excellent interface, but I hate using Apple products. Thought it would work with my Windows rig, but to no avail. Went with another company's high end interface (Antelope Discrete 4 Synergy Core), and it works great. But I had an opportunity to get the Twin USB and I couldn't pass it up. Works like a charm. The simplicity is second to none. Set your preamp, compressor and EQ and you're good to go! I'd tell you what my vocal chain is, but nah, find it just like I did!

My only drawback on the interface is that they only come with 2 SHARC chips. Coming from a Twin Quad and from the Antelope Discrete 4 Synergy Core, the two chips are a bit of a limiter. But there's always a workaround to everything.

Who can help me ?

As we all know, in the apollo twin x duo HE version, the dynamic range is 127db, however, in this apollo twin usb duo version, the manufacturer does not have that parameter? Can anyone give me those numbers?
I really like Twin x duo HE, but having a computer that supports the thunderbolt 3 standard is still an obstacle for me (at least until 2021).
I had to think of twin USB HE

Best Interface for the Price

The quality on this thing is impeccable! Easy controls, slick design, and great plugins to go with it. I had a Scarlett 2i4 3rd Gen. before I got the Apollo and the difference is incredibly noticeable; sounds more open and clean than the Scarlett does.

Couple things I am not too fond of with the Apollo that even my Scarlett did well.
1. The main issue I have is the gain control/allowance. If you choose the wrong input on a channel, you might seriously burst an eardrum no joke. Why is there no limiter of some sort to prevent this from happening? Also the "playback cap," if you will, aka the loudness of immediate playback, is too loud. Again, there should be some sort of resilant limiter on the Apollo and/or software with a high attack and fast release so that the level right after clicking play is not so sudden and loud. Lastly, underruns from overloading are louder and more obnoxious-sounding than they should be. None of these issues were a problem on the Scarlett.

2. Gain knob appears to have an exponential rate of adjustment, meaning as you turn the knob, the more % of an increase there is. This is in contrast to a linear rate of adjustment which keeps level adjustment at a consistent 1:1 rate.

3. Hasn't helped my CPU. I'm on an i7 processor and 16gb of RAM and was hoping this Apollo would help at least some with overruns and glitches, but it almost seems to have gotten a little worse. Not a whole lot but it definitely hasn't helped any.

4. Haven't figured out adjusting delay compensation when using UAD plugins in DAW. It sounds normal during playback, but after export there is a very noticeable delay in whatever track the plugin was placed. This is prevented me from even using any of the plugins yet. I will say, however, this could be due to ignorance and I just haven't found the answer yet. Nonetheless, more support/easier means of finding a solution to this issue should be more readily accessable.

Even with these pretty hefty issues I have with the Apollo, it's still the best of the best in terms of quality for the money. I wouldn't even think about taking it back. It just seems that the options are lacking with regards to obtaining a more individualized experience. All this being said, you still won't regret the purchase. It's becoming an industry standard!

Windows USB Apollo Twin

Works great (so far). A lot of folks seemed to have problems with Windows USB and UAD. As for my experience,. I had a relatively hassle free setup and the unit operates as advertised. I bought mine refurbished, note to othjers, do not follow standard install path if you buy refurbbished, make sure you install via the 'used device' path even if it is factory refreshed. I write that for the reviewer that may want to give it another try when they pull it from the closet.

Great Sound with a few minor problems

First and foremost, the sound is great. No problems with the quality of the build, the interface, and ease of use. My minor problems are with the software and/or drivers. I went from having zero problems on my Windows 10 PC and existing audio interface, to having multiple and intermittent software issues requiring reboots, resets, and reinstalls of the software. It will just randomly stop working sometimes. I can always stop my session and troubleshoot the problem, but I miss the old days where my audio interface just worked. I'm still giving it 4 stars for the quality of the sound and fantastic hardware but not 5 because of the software issues I've experienced versus other audio interfaces.

UNISONには驚いた。

入力の音質もヘッドホンアンプもSTEINBERGの物とは別次元だった。素晴らしいツールだ。UADもUNISONが効いているのかWAVESのものより数段クオリティが高く感じた。

apollo twin

I found it little bit hard to handle the software since I couldn’t found how to run the UAD application for the recording because I didn’t find a way to run it manually and it didn’t run by it self automatically (I don’t know what the name of it .. but it’s the application from UAD ) so I tried the pro tools and it’s worked with it . but I still want to try your application

Faire attention

Qualités au rendez-vous, seule inconvénient c'est qu'il faut ajouter à votre Appollo un satellite pour pouvoir exploiter 4 où 5 vst pour composer et mixer un titre problème de DSP c'est vraiment dommage

Apollo Twin USB

Works well, included plugins are nice. Needed customer support on a plugin I purchased and response was very fast. 5 stars if the cost was less.

I love my Apollo Twin USB and I'm so glad it finally works :)

This is the best small interface I've ever owned; I previously had a Focusrite Scarlett i818 2nd Gen which was fine until I bought a new PC Build and the Scarlett started causing it to crash. So I decided I needed a better quality interface and hence, the Apollo Twin USB.

The build quality of the Apollo Twin is fantastic, it looks and feels top quality: it has weight to it, nothing feels cheap or flimsy and the User Interface/button layout feels so nice, it makes me want to use it and keep using it. A good layout design can be motivational in itself to make music!

The Universal Audio plug ins are great and having Digital Signal Processing separate from the CPU of my computer is an excellent bonus because it leaves massive headroom for use of other plugins, say Native Instruments for example, in my DAW at the same time - so the potential for a powerful system, dependent on your CPU and DSP amount is there.

The only downside is I did have issues that lasted for about two weeks with popping and clicking in my audio, which got worse as I upped audio sample rates. This was frustrating, I can't lie, as when you buy something new - especially something that cost 600 bucks - you do want to just crack on and be able to use it straight out of the box. I contacted Universal Audio Support however, who got back to me within a few days with a list of possible fixes. Julius @ Customer Support was super helpful and I can't thank him enough as my problem is now fixed and fingers crossed, so far so good! Which I'm glad of because I really wanted to be able to use this awesome interface. IF anybody experiencing pops and clicks in their audio with use of the Apollo Twin USB interface is reading this, for me the culprit was the C-State setting in the CPU Power Management Menu in my computer's BIOS. I basically had to disable C-State and everything, so far is working nicely. I hope this helps anybody in need and saves you a hell of a lot of time!

Please note that the Apollo Twin USB is by no means 'Plug and Play' and does take some setting up and time ironing out creases. I Think this is to be expected however, given the sophistication of the interface and the use of its own onboard processors. In spite of these things, I would STILL give the interface a high rating! Although I've reviewed 4 Stars, I would actually give it 4 and a half if the website here let me! If you've got a powerful computer that is up to date with a built in USB 3 connection, I'd say don't hesitate to get yourself one of these babies if you're looking to make a switch!
Peace :)

More than I expected.

There was nothing wrong with the interface I had been using. I'm a modern creative, so I do everything from composition to mix down. The dramatic sound improvement resulted in improved productivity, because it's such a pleasure to with with.
