Overview
Brainworx bx_refinement Plug-In.
Lose Harshness Without Destroying your Mix.

The Brainworx bx_refinement plug-in for UAD-2 and Apollo tastefully removes the harsh, hard edges of your tracks without dramatically altering the character and tone of your source material. An exceptional mastering tool that also features M/S (Mid/Side) processing, the Brainworx bx_refinement imparts a tube-like analog smoothness and is a boon for mix engineers looking to tame unpleasant digital hardness on individual tracks.

Now You Can:
  • Bring the sound of a tube-like analog mastering chain to your UAD-2 and Apollo-equipped workstations
  • Easily soften high frequency harshness in mixes and masters
  • Inject saturation and presence to subtly enhance your tracks
  • Use the Solo feature to hear exactly what you’re removing from the recording

Refinement, Defined

Designed by mastering engineer Gebre Waddell of Stonebridge Mastering, the bx_refinement plug-in is based on a careful combination of time-tested approaches, modern techniques, and the latest science on the sensitivity of the human ear. The end result is a fully-in-the-box analog mastering sound.

Add Tube-like Tone
The bx_refinement is not an emulation of a certain tube sound per se. Instead, it combines several characteristics found in ultra-musical tube-based equipment to give you an easy-to-operate, effective tool. As you tweak the bx_refinement, the tube graphic gives you precise visual feedback about how intensely the process is being applied. It’s easy to see how much, how fast, and how dynamic the processing is by simply by looking at the tube’s glow.
Easily Target Problem Areas
With powerful, simple controls, the bx_refinement allows you to quickly identify and discard offending frequencies. The core of the bx_refinement is the Damping control. It features a dynamic peak band EQ, reducing harsh frequencies. The Solo Filter button lets you listen to only the frequencies you’re removing while the Soft/Hard function sets the character of the processing.

Dynamic Flexibility
The Damping Modulation section lets you tweak the processor according to the peak level of the input material. You can also implement an oscillation option to create nice warming effects and adjust the speed of the oscillator with the duration knob. Just sync the oscillator to your DAW’s tempo to emphasize rhythmic aspects of your mix or master. It’s a processor that will truly stand alone in your sonic toolkit.

FAQ
Brainworx bx_refinement Plug-In.
Basics and FAQ.
What makes bx_refinement different?

The bx_refinement is specifically designed to smooth out harsh sounding recordings and to breathe life in the music. Heavily compressed tracks can often sound harsh. bx_refinement allows you to round off those hard edges and create a warmer, more analog sounding track, without losing the punch of the original.

What benefit does bx_refinement provide compared to using hardware or software?

Other mastering processors are designed to solve specific problems like frequency or level imbalances-usually at some cost to the character of the recorded audio--bx_refinement is designed to more subtly smooth out and refine audio without changing the character of the source.

What are some of the best or common ways to use bx_refinement, to increase perceived loudness without inducing clipping?

By being able to balance between the de-harshing effect of the damping and adding back in saturation and presence, you can make “loud” mixes sound warm and analog while maintaining high levels.

What sources do I use bx_refinement plug-in with, what sounds especially good when processed with bx_refinement?

While bx_refinement can be used on any source, it was designed as a mastering tool so mixed stereo music tracks are its primary application.

"I feel that bx_refinement gives me more control while getting results faster. That's an unusual pairing, but one that makes good sense when time is money. I've been happy with the results; and I only use half of the features in this plug-in."

    Still very impressed - but
    by G. Piazza (Tuesday 13 May, 2014)

I stand by my earlier review - this plug-in is a must have for In The Box mastering work, and even tracks would benefit, potentially making the mastering engineer's life easier. I still would request an adjustable frequency range (from 1 kHz - 6 kHz) instead of the fixed center around 2 - 3 kHz. … Read More

Outstanding? Yes! Can I get a discount? No!
    by S. Hurtow (Monday 28 April, 2014)

I have to hand it to UAD' Marketing Department. They certainly know how to use their promotions at 'Cracker-Jack' timing. I get the latest V 7.6 update email, upgrade my software, hit the 14-Day Trial button, instantly fall in love with bx_refinement Plug-In, go back to the store, put it in my baske … Read More

    Digital sound to Analog
    by S. Barker (Tuesday 22 April, 2014)

Tried the demo on a couple of tracks and until you A/B the tracks with this plugin you don't realize how harsh and digital they sounded before ? Strange really as the Studer tape emulations and Manley EQ's i thought were taking the harsh digital sound away?, But having this plugin in the masteri … Read More

    subtle and useful.
    by P. Lengagne (Friday 18 April, 2014)

I've tried it on 2 projects, the accumulation of tracks (virtual strings) always created an unpleasant sensation around 3-4 kz, but this problem disappears like magic with this plugin. My next purchase for sure. … Read More

Does what it says it will.
    by J. Roger (Wednesday 16 April, 2014)

Demo'd it over a few tracks. It does exactly what it claims to do, and does it extremely well and easily. The oscillator is a nice touch for adding a bit of life and a subtle breathing quality to the track. Probably worth the 200, though I still kinda wanna save my money to see what UA comes ou … Read More
