Universal Audio Visits Muscle Shoals to Build an Iconic UA 610 Tube Recording Console

UA CEO and lifelong "audio archeologist" Bill Putnam Jr. embarks on journey to build a new UA 610 recording console at legendary Fame Recording Studios

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA — April 28, 2025  — Universal Audio (UA), a worldwide leader in audio production tools, is proud to begin a new chapter in its storied legacy with a visit to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to rebuild a historic UA 610 tube recording console at Fame Recording Studios. Documented as part of a three-part video series, the 610 console restoration aims to bridge the gap between UA's storied past and present.

Fame Recording Studios is hallowed grounds where musical giants like Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and The Rolling Stones cut timeless records. At the heart of those records was the iconic UA 610, a modular tube recording console originally designed by UA founder Bill Putnam Sr. in 1958.

Based on Putnam's innovative modular design, the "new" 610 console is being built with vintage modules previously owned by rock legend Neil Young, bolstering its unique pedigree.

In the first episode of the series, UA CEO Bill Putnam Jr. travels to Muscle Shoals to plan the console's design, ensuring that it pairs seamlessly with UA Apollo interfaces and LUNA Digital Audio Workstation.

“This is about honoring the legacy of my father’s design while making something that could serve as the centerpiece of a modern studio,” explains Putnam Jr. “The 610 shaped the sound of Muscle Shoals, and we’re excited to bring that magic forward for a new generation of musicians and records.”
