Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 is worth it if you want a compact, one-mic USB audio interface that adds real studio character to what you record. It pairs 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion with a Tone Shaping Preamp that offers three classic preamp sounds, plus a Hi-Z instrument input so you can track voice and guitar together. It also includes UAD plug-ins, virtual instruments, and a DAW, so you have everything you need to start making records the day it arrives.
Volt 1 Gen 2 builds UA studio tone into the interface itself, while most USB audio interfaces aim only for a clean capture. Its Tone Shaping Preamp gives you Warmth, Focus, and Shine modes inspired by classic tube, solid state, and British Class-A mic preamps, all at the push of a button. It's designed by the same team behind Apollo interfaces and the UAD plug-ins heard on countless hit records.
Warmth, Focus, and Shine are the three Tone Shaping modes on the Volt 1 Gen 2 mic preamp, and each one captures a different classic analog sound. Warmth is inspired by the UA 610 tube preamp and adds depth and body to vocals and acoustic guitar. Focus brings the punchy, controlled sound of a famous American solid state console for rap vocals, electric guitar, and bass, while Shine adds the open, airy top end of classic British Class-A circuitry.
Volt 1 Gen 2 moves up to 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion and replaces the original Volt 1's single Vintage preamp mode with three Tone Shaping modes: Warmth, Focus, and Shine. The core idea stays the same, with one mic input, one instrument input, and USB bus power in a compact body. If you loved the original Volt 1's vintage flavor, Gen 2 gives you more colors to choose from and more detail in every take. It also allows you to record both the mic and instrument inputs at the same time, which is not possible on the Volt 1.
Choose the Volt 1 Gen 2 if you record one mic at a time, and the Volt 2 Gen 2 if you want two mic preamps for duets, interviews, or stereo recording. Volt 1 Gen 2 gives you one Tone Shaping mic/line input plus a Hi-Z instrument input, so a singer-songwriter can still track voice and guitar together. Volt 2 Gen 2 adds a second Tone Shaping preamp, a full-color Smart Display, and Auto-Gain with Clip Protection.
The Volt 1 Gen 2 converts audio at up to 32-bit depth and a 192 kHz sample rate, so it captures your performance in fine detail from the quietest breath to the loudest chorus. Its mic input delivers 119 dB of dynamic range and -108 dB THD+N, which keeps soft passages clean and loud ones clear.
The Volt 1 Gen 2 has a studio-quality ¼" headphone output that delivers up to 52 mW into 32-ohm headphones with 121 dB of dynamic range. That's plenty of clean level for most studio headphones, so you can hear yourself clearly while tracking. The headphone output shares its mix with the monitor outputs, so what you hear in your headphones matches what comes out of your speakers.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 is USB class-compliant and works with iPad and iPhone running iPadOS or iOS 16 or newer. Devices with USB-C connect directly, and devices with a Lightning port need an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. Bus-power requirements vary by device, so some phone and tablet setups work best with the Volt's USB external power input connected.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 works with macOS 12 Monterey or newer and Windows 10 64-bit or newer, on Intel, AMD, and Apple silicon processors. It connects to any USB 2.0 or faster port through its USB-C connector, and the cable is included. On Mac it's class-compliant with no driver required, and on Windows it uses the UA ASIO driver, available in the UA Connect app.
The Volt 1 Gen 2 works with all major DAWs on Mac and Windows, plus music apps on iPad and iPhone. It also comes with LUNA, UA's award-winning DAW, so you have a full recording and mixing environment in the box. Because Volt is class-compliant, your recording software sees it like any standard audio device.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 records your voice and an instrument at the same time on two separate channels. Plug your mic into the XLR combo input and your guitar or bass into the front-panel Hi-Z instrument input, and each one lands on its own track. It's built for singer-songwriters who want to capture a full performance in one pass.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 has built-in loopback, which blends your mic with audio playing on your computer and sends the mix to your stream, podcast, or video call. That means music beds, game audio, or a remote guest can sit right alongside your voice in realtime. Add a Tone Shaping mode to your mic, and your broadcast voice gets the same character as your records.
No, the Volt 1 Gen 2 is USB bus-powered, so it runs on power from your computer with no outlet or power supply required. It draws just 2.4W in typical use, which makes it an easy fit for laptops and mobile rigs. When a host device can't supply enough power, as with some phones and tablets, a separate USB external power input (5VDC at 1A minimum) keeps it running.
No, the Volt 1 Gen 2 uses UAD Native plug-ins, which run on your computer's processor instead of dedicated DSP hardware. That's how the included software bundle, which features titles like the Teletronix LA-2A, UA 1176, and UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection, runs in your DAW or LUNA. If you later want to track through UAD plug-ins with Unison™ preamp modeling and near-zero latency, UA's Apollo interfaces add onboard DSP for exactly that.
The Volt 1 Gen 2 includes the LUNA DAW plus UAD plug-ins and instruments used on countless hit records. You get plug-ins such as the Teletronix LA-2A and UA 1176 compressors, the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection, Century Tube Channel Strip, Topline Vocal Tune, Pure Plate Reverb, Galaxy Tape Echo, Oxide Tape Recorder, Vibe Analog Machines, the PolyMAX and Anthem synths, and the UAD Lion '68 and Showtime '64 guitar amps. Additional instruments and production tools from partner developers are included too, and bundle contents are subject to change.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 is a smart starting point because the UAD plug-ins and LUNA come with you as your studio grows. Your UAD Native plug-ins stay with your UA account, so they keep working if you move to a larger Volt or an Apollo interface. When you're ready for more, UAD Spark Studio adds a much larger library of UAD plug-ins along with the LUNA Studio DAW.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 has a front-panel Hi-Z instrument input made for plugging a guitar or bass in directly with a standard ¼" instrument cable. Its 1 megohm input impedance preserves the full tone and response of your pickups, with no DI box needed. From there you can play through the included UAD Lion '68 Super Lead and Showtime '64 Tube amp plug-ins by using software monitoring, or record the clean signal and dial in amp tones later.
Yes, the Volt 1 Gen 2 is built for mobile recording, with USB bus power, a compact rugged body, and support for laptops, iPad, and iPhone. Pack it with a mic, headphones, and your instrument, and you have a complete portable studio for writing sessions, travel, or rehearsal-room demos. The Tone Shaping Preamp means those on-the-road recordings keep the character of a studio take.
