just the same as a scarlett

honestly my 6 yr old scarlett 18i8 broke and I got some friends with the apollo twin so i decided to go with the volt 2 because of my budget. in comparison to the apollo it's still got all the same problems with scratchy recordings at volume.

The twin offers the real features, with the volt there is no plugins that come with it that are useful and the features it has are very mediocre.

Vintage does nothing good in practice, generally just adding more noise, which i guess is technically warmer smh. nowhere near an actual tube.

for the price I can't really complain I got it because I was curious of it's capabilities but in actuality there is no real benefit over the comparable focusrite products.

Good-sounding interface; Vintage mode is a bit of (literal) hype

I have the Volt 2 and use it with Ableton Live for a travel setup. The mic preamps sound nice and clean and I don't have any of the "crackles and pops at buffer sizes above 512" reported by some other folks.

Vintage mode puzzles me a little bit. It's basically a slight "smile" EQ curve with a 0.5dB bump at 50-70Hz and a +2dB shelf at about 8-10kHz or so. A bit more hype is present in the "air" frequencies, it seems to me (another +0.5dB maybe?). There might also be a tiny cut at around 500-600hZ, IIRC. The "warmth" is simply evenly-distributed harmonic distortion once the signal approaches -10 to -8dBFS. And it gets dirty quick up there.

The puzzling bit is that I generally aim for signal peaks of -12dBFS hitting the converters. This means I don't get any harmonic distortion with the Volt Vintage mode when following conventional wisdom around signal levels; just the EQ curve. I have better analogue means to add harmonic distortion at standard tracking levels instead of pounding the converters. Minus 1 star.

All-in-all, it sounds good and works well with Live and the e906, SM57, and K87-based mics I typically use. The Hi-Z input is bog standard and I don't find the Vintage mode to be useful there. Other than the somewhat disappointing Vintage mode, I like it for what it is: a good-sounding, solidly-built interface with a decent form factor for travel rigs. Oh, and a reasonable price for UA kit is rare!

Frequently Asked Questions

Volt 2 is worth it if you want a compact 2-in / 2-out USB interface that gives you UA preamp and converter quality plus a complete software studio in one box. You get two Vintage Mic Preamp inputs, 24-bit / 192 kHz conversion, 48V phantom power, and a bundle that includes the LUNA Digital Audio Workstation and UAD plug-ins like the 1176 Classic FET Compressor and Teletronix LA-2A. For most people setting up a first studio, that's everything you need to make a finished record without buying anything else.
Volt 2 is different because of Vintage Mic Preamp mode, an all-analog circuit built into the input path that shapes your signal before it ever hits the converters. Most interfaces in this class give you a clean preamp and stop there. Volt 2 gives you the clean option too, plus a button that adds the rich, full character of UA's classic 610 tube preamp on the way in.
Vintage Mic Preamp mode on Volt 2 is an all-analog circuit, designed exclusively for Volt interfaces, that emulates the sound of UA's 610 tube preamp on the mic, line, and instrument inputs. You press the VINTAGE button and the tone is printed to your recording in realtime, with no plug-in and no processing load on your computer. It's the same preamp lineage heard on records from Ray Charles to Van Halen, which is why a single button changes the feel of a take so much.
Get Volt 2 if you ever need to record two sources at once, and Volt 1 if you only ever record one. Volt 2 has two mic inputs and two line outputs with a Vintage preamp on each channel, so you can track a vocal and a guitar together, capture two people talking, or mic a source in stereo. Volt 1 gives you one mic input and the same two line outputs, so it's the pick for solo overdubbing on a tighter budget.
The difference is analog compression. Volt 2 gives you two Vintage preamps and no compressor, while Volt 276 gives you the same 2-in / 2-out setup plus two channels of 76 Compressor mode, inspired by UA's own 1176 Limiting Amplifier. If you want to shape dynamics on the way in with three tailored presets rather than compress later in the mix, models like Volt 276 are worth the step up.
Volt 2 uses the same preamp and converter design philosophy UA applies across its interface line, with 24-bit / 192 kHz conversion and a low-noise front end that stays clean at high gain. That matters most on quiet sources like an acoustic guitar or a soft vocal, where a noisy preamp buries detail you can never get back. The onboard headphone amplifier is built to the same standard, so what you hear while tracking is what actually landed on the track.
No, Volt 2 has Direct Monitoring, which routes your input straight to your headphones in realtime before it makes the round trip through your computer. You hear yourself as you play, with no delay and no plug-in lag, which keeps timing natural on vocal and guitar takes. You can blend that direct signal with the playback coming back from your DAW using the front panel controls.
Yes, Volt 2 works with macOS and Windows, including Apple Silicon Macs. As a class-compliant USB device, it connects instantly to Mac without installing drivers. On Windows you install the UA Connect app to get the driver and register your software. The included USB-C to USB-A cable covers most computers out of the box.
Yes, Volt 2 works with iPad and iPhone running iOS 14 or later, because it's class-compliant USB. Depending on your device you may need a connection adapter and an external power source, since Volt 2 draws its power over the USB bus. Once it's connected, you can track into a mobile recording app with the same preamps and converters you'd use at your desk.
Yes, Volt 2 works with any Mac or Windows DAW that supports standard Core Audio or ASIO drivers, so your existing session setup carries straight over. It also includes LUNA, UA's award-winning DAW, which runs on both Mac and Windows and is built to give you the workflow and sound of an analog studio. Volt 2 adds 1-in / 1-out MIDI as well, so controllers, synths, and drum machines connect without a separate MIDI box.
Yes, Volt 2 has two mic and instrument inputs, so you can record a vocal and a guitar simultaneously to separate tracks. Each channel has its own gain control and its own Vintage preamp button, which means you can print the 610 character on the guitar and keep the vocal clean, or the other way around. The Hi-Z instrument input takes a guitar or bass directly, so no DI box is needed.
Volt 2 works well for podcasting and streaming, since two mic inputs with 48V phantom power let you record a host and a guest at broadcast quality. Direct Monitoring gives both people realtime headphone monitoring with no delay, which keeps conversation natural. Because Volt 2 is class-compliant, your computer sees it as a standard audio device, so streaming and conferencing software picks it up without special routing.
Yes, Volt 2 is bus-powered over USB, so a laptop or tablet is the only thing you need to bring with it. There's no external power supply to pack and no separate driver box to configure, and the enclosure is built to take the wear of getting moved around. It's a practical way to capture an idea in a hotel room, a rehearsal space, or wherever the song shows up.
No, Volt 2 delivers UA's analog character without onboard DSP, because Vintage Mic Preamp mode is a real analog circuit rather than a processor running a model. For everything after the input stage, UAD native plug-ins run directly on your computer's CPU inside your DAW, so you get the same 1176, LA-2A, and 610 emulations trusted on professional records. Onboard DSP still matters if you want to monitor through those plug-ins live at very low buffer sizes, which is what UA's Apollo line is built for.
Volt 2 is a strong home studio interface for anyone recording one or two sources at a time, which covers most songwriters, producers, and podcasters working in a spare room. Two mic preamps, an instrument input, MIDI, a headphone amp, and monitor outputs give you a complete signal chain in a box that fits next to a laptop. The included LUNA DAW and UAD plug-ins mean the software side of the studio is handled too.
Along with Volt 2, you need a computer or iOS device, a microphone, headphones or monitors, and cables, and the software is already covered. Volt 2 includes LUNA, popular UAD plug-ins, and a set of virtual instruments, plus tutorials and a trial of PureMix Pro to get you moving. A condenser microphone will work fine here, since Volt 2 supplies 48V phantom power on both channels.
Yes, Volt 2 comes with LUNA, UA's award-winning DAW for Mac and Windows, at no extra cost. LUNA gives you unlimited track counts along with features like AI-powered Voice Control and Instrument Detection, built around the sound and workflow of an analog studio. Volt 2 also includes the UAD Explore FREE plug-in bundle, so you have processing and instruments from the first session.
