Apollo Artist Sessions Vol. III: Vance Powell & INTL

Session Notes

In this Apollo Artist Session, Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton) records INTL live at Sputnik Sound in Nashville as they perform "Straight Line," exclusively through a pair of first generation Apollo 16 audio interfaces with Realtime UAD Processing.

The Mix

Powell used a variety of UAD plug-ins to accentuate the track’s ever-building layers of dense, thick swirl. For dynamics control he called on the UA 1176, Neve® 33609TM, Teletronix LA-2A, as well as the Studer A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder to gently round off transients. EQ was handled by the Pultec EQP 1A and HLF 3C plug-in from the Pultec Passive EQ Collection, the Neve 1081® Classic Console EQ, and the Neve 1073TM Preamp and EQ Collection. For time-based effects and modulation, Powell used the MXR Flanger/Doubler and Galaxy Tape Echo plug-ins.

Microphones

Microphones on the sessions include AEA R88 and R92, AKG D12, Neumann FET47, EV 664, Miktek C5, RCA BK-5B and Type 77-DX, and a Shure Beta 52A and SM57.
