This month came down to a five-way tie. The tie breaker was John Kelly's detailed description (take note contestants!). Thanks again everybody for sharing your music!

November WINNER: John Kelly

The Square.mp3

John writes:

This is pretty simple. I bought the 6176 about a year ago for my studio in Nashville. It was to be my first high-end mic pre and at the time and I wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go. A good friend told me about UA and I was all ears. I didn't spend a lot of time making a decision because as soon as I saw it I loved it. With his trusted advice and the units appeal, I bought it.

While I used on every song for just about every instrument on my last CD, FORGIVEN, THE SQUARE is the one I had some fun with. I tracked the drums first of course, and just wasn't sure where I was going to use my new gear. I was wishing I had to make it easy and go for the overheads - but, settled for the snare. WOW WOW WOW is really all I can say. I played with sounds for the better part of the morning on the snare alone and not because I was frustrated, it was because everything sounded so wonderful that I couldn't decide where to leave it. This unit has so many possibilities, it's just a great piece. I settle for a high gain - lower level on the preamp stage and just left the EQ alone. I hit the 1176 very lightly controlling the sound but not coloring it up to much. Just a pure slightly hot sound that I just loved. The drummer played brushes on this one so less was definitely more but going from my digimax it to this was so awesome, I only wish I had eight of them.

I tracked every other instrument through this machine with such delight. I never had to search for a sound that I liked, I just had to decide which of these great sounds I was going to settle with. I think the vocals sounded best, I used a Neumann 103 and again didn't overdo it anywhere. I kept the gain at 0 and pushed the level a bit just barely hitting the red then hit the 1176 with a tiny bit more attack. I sang a bit softer on some of these tracks and the unit really captured the character of my voice with a little more input on the 1176.

So this unit is the sole preamp on this whole song minus the rest of the drums. I still would love to stereo a pair as overheads and I can't wait to buy the 8110. I might even go for the 2-610. I want t use it for my grand piano with my two C 414 Bs. Thanks Universal Audio for making the best sounding pres out there.
